Rewiring America offers tool to help Americans go electric, save money

July 23, 2024

Homeowners can get a free, Personal Electrification Planner to help save money, improve home comfort, and make a positive climate impact. Offered by Rewiring America, it promises an “easy-to-use home-electrification planning tool” that will generate a customized plan in less than five minutes.

The planner will estimate upfront costs for a whole-home electrification program. It incorporates federal incentives based on the user’s income, location, and housing type, while also considering the user’s unique home, lifestyle, and priorities.

Based on responses to a series of questions, the tool will estimate upfront costs, annual bill savings, annual emissions reductions, and air pollution and health impacts for various upgrades, such as heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, induction stoves, electric dryers, EV chargers, and rooftop solar.

“Our goal was to develop a set of resources that could help homeowners front load these learnings, make smarter choices, and give people a better idea of what the journey could look like for their specific home. The Personal Electrification Planner really gives homeowners that advantage,” proclaimed Tom Mercer, head of product at Rewiring America.

In addition to helping homeowners, the offering includes an “Electrification for Renters” page that guides renters on talking to landlords and undertaking projects themselves.

Rewiring America said future enhancements to the Personal Electrification website will include ways users can connect with experts and resources in their area.

Rewiring America is an electrification nonprofit focused on electrifying homes, businesses, and communities. Its data and tools are created to “help Americans save money, tackle nationwide emissions goals, improve health, and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce.” Last year, the organization issued a “Pace of Progress” report that identified the residential electrification adoption rate needed to meet the nation’s climate targets.
